Vaccinology: From Scientific Discovery to Monitoring Safety
November 16, 2019 @ 8:30 AM - 9:00 AM
The remarkable success of immunization programs is the result of a complex system starting with basic science discoveries, leading to development and testing of vaccine candidates, manufacturing, vaccine delivery, and outcome and safety monitoring. Since most vaccine‐preventable diseases are spread person‐to‐person, many vaccines induce not only individual protection but community protection as well (i.e., herd or community immunity). This presentation will review how vaccines work in providing individual and community protection and quantify the success of vaccines in the 20th century.
